 | Big Bat Pays Off, Schmidt Player of the Week Monday, July 14th, 1980: At the age of 30, Mike Schmidt might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Texas third baseman put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .455 batting average. For his efforts Schmidt collected the American Player of the Week Award. He racked up 10 hits in 22 at-bats, 2 home runs and 8 RBIs last week in 5 games. Schmidt is hitting .273 for the season with 27 home runs, 55 RBIs and 62 runs scored.
